During russias disastrous invasion of Ukraine the leader of the wagner group prigozin became increasingly critical about the russian leadership crossing red line after red line. Unsurprisingly the russian leadership started trying to screw wagner over and eventually prigozin had enough and started moving towards moscow in an attempt to grab power for himself.

Progizon is a master master manipulator
He does a very good job of crafting the image of a hands-on and grounded military leader.

He might actually be able to become a new dictator of russia thanks to his ability to manipulate and control people for his own gain. He is way more appealing as a leader than putin.

Mercenaries from PMC Wagner freely entered the Voronezh region
Mercenaries from the private military company Wagner freely crossed the Russian-Ukrainian border in the direction of Voronezh on June 24.

According to the Telegram channels affiliated with the PMC, the machinery entered through the Buhaivka border crossing.

At the same time, 180 Russian security forces from the garrison of the border checkpoint did not interfere with the mercenaries.

PMC Wagner mercenaries published photos of unarmed representatives of various law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation. They were arranged in line, their status is unknown.

Also, the videos have been published on social networks with the alleged passage of a military convoy on the outskirts of Voronezh. Russian telegram channels report that the convoy contains BM-21 Grad MLRS.

Reuters news agency, citing its own sources, reports on the seizure of military facilities in the regional center. There is no visual confirmation of this at the time of publication of the news on the network.

As previously reported, on June 24, PMC Wagner blocked the city of Rostov-on-Don. Mercenaries took control of the headquarters of the Southern Military District, the directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB, as well as the military airfield Millerovo.

The leader of the PMC Wagner, oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin, demands to give him the Russian military leadership.

Russian President Putin gave the order to neutralize the PMC Wagner mercenaries. The FSB of the Russian Federation qualifies Prigozhin’s actions as an organization of an armed rebellion.

Prigozon chickens out by accepting a deal
He had a shot of becoming dictator of russia but he may have squandered that by accepting a deal brokered by lukasjenko.

https://edition.cnn.com/europe/live-news/russia-ukraine-war-news-06-24-23/index.html

He did get most/all of what he wanted earlier by having Sergei Shoigu be at least removed, getting immunity for his troops, being allowed to remain as a mercenary group instead of under the control of the ministrary of defense, etc.

But this situation clearly isn't stable. Wagner is too big of a treat for putin to ignore and the putin regime is too big of a treat for prigozin to ignore, they are bound to eventually clash again.

Did something bad happen to putin?
It made no sense for prigozin to withdraw in exchange for a deal with putin (who has a history of not following up on deals) when he was about to win a civil war.

One possibility is prigozin being an idiot.

The other possibility is that bad things happened to putin (killed/captured) resulting in him no longer being able to govern. Even then however why didn't prigozon do more to secure his own power?

Another factor we may have underlooked is putin threatening family members and relatives of wagner troops.

Prigozin should have expected that putin would go after his family. Prigozhin may have tried and failed to keep his loved ones safe allowing putin to extort him into accepting a bad deal.
