Weinstein addressed the court before he was sentenced, saying "I wasn't about power, I was about making movies." He has maintained any sexual activity was consensual, and told the court he believed he had friendly relationships with the women.

United states is very draconian when it comes to punishing people who in any way deviate from their sexual norms, other forms of abuse (that are far worse) is of course being completely ignored. It's not even clear he did anything wrong but since he is very unattractive it's assume it wasn't consensual.

It is possible that he would have gotten off far lighter if he had been less famous, having attention on you will lead to more focus on any potential criminality and thus you actually get punished for being successful.

If he actually was guilty why didn't he just flee to some place that wouldn't hand him back over to the US? he had plenty of time for that.

Most likely he assumed the trail would be somewhat fair and thus he wouldn't get convicted or the sentence would be fairly minimal. Of course that not what happened and now he is stuck in jail possibly until his death.
