Tretinoin (brand names Retin-A, Avita, Renova) is a vitamin A derivative that is used to treat comedonal acne, as well as whiteheads and blackheads. It works by boosting skin cell turnover, which facilitates follicular extrusion of blocked material. It also keeps new comedones from forming.
Tretinoin is the only topical drug that has been shown to enhance wrinkle appearance.

If you're asking how to use tretinoin cream, here are some tips to help you get the most out of it.
  • At night, apply a thin coating of Retin-A. A little goes a big way.
  • In the morning, wash your face with a gentle facial scrub or a rough washcloth. This will improve in the reduction of visible peeling.
  • Apply a decent water-based moisturizer after washing your face. (Yes, gentlemen, this also applies to you.) The moisturizer will make the medicine's drying impact more acceptable.
  • If flaking happens during the day, remove it with a washcloth and apply additional moisturizer, or just apply body lotion.
  • Use a moisturizer that also has sunscreen in it. If not, use sunscreen whenever you are in the sun, even if it is for a brief period of time. Tretinoin increases your susceptibility to sunburn.

When you initially begin using Retin-A, use it every other or third night. The flaking and irritation adverse effects are generally the most severe during the first two weeks of use. You can apply the medication more regularly as your skin adjusts to it.

It's fine to take a few days off if you detect an increase in irritation or flaking. Just don't stop taking the medicine without first seeing your doctor.
