Politics tend to select for people high in dark triad traits, people pretending to be noble when they are the exact opposite.
Trump is just more open with his antisocial traits, he constantly make obvious lies and gaslight people into thinking he tells them the truth, he would still be nothing if it wasn't for the constant support from rightwing media, it's rightwing media that props up Trump and republicans in general covering for their crimes.
People will vote for liars thinking they tell the truth and later vote to re-elect them even though they are not going a good job governing the country.
