Playstation 4 launched when the competition (xbox one and wii u) was a total joke. Sony has also put a lot of effort into locking games to their platform in an attempt to make people buy their weak hardware.

Despite this PS4 didn't sell that well, a lot of people just switched to PC instead

PS4 only has 5GB of ram for games

Unfortunately the OS still uses far more than 1GB so you still only get 5.5GB of which isn't enough for 4K gaming, the PS4 GPU is also too weak for 2160P which is why they use checkerboard rendering.

Having an operating system waste 3 GB of valuable GDDR5 memory isn't acceptable, windows 10 can run just fine on 1GB ram and a system specialized should use far less if anything at all.

I have seen claims that PS4 have a mode that frees up more ram but i have not been able to find a source for that.

Does exclusives even make economical sense?
Its just too costly to keep wanted content away from a big platform, Sony has already started to cave with "Death Stranding" and "Horizon Zero Dawn"

If a PC player just buys a PS4 for single player exclusives they will not really make more money over selling the same games directly on PC.

In the case of PS5 they will probably lose money on each condole sold so they don't really want people to buy a PS5 just to play a few single player exclusives (not subscribing to PS+)

We might also see governments action against exclusive titles since it is anti-competetive allowing sony to stop a smaller platform from getting a game since then they will not lose out much money. Thus we end up with a situation where the only real options are windows 10 and PS5.

Why no 1440p option?
The ps4 pro GPU is suited for 1440p (being too weak for 4K) so why cannot you just hook it up to a 1440p monitor?

Well in a typical console fashion sony didn't bother to implement this since most TVs are 4K or 1080p.

The xbox one x does have a 1440p option since microsoft do not really have exclusives to rely on, thus they need to actually deliver in other ways. Xbox one X does 4K30 just fine so there is actually less need for a 1440p option. Recently the one x was discontinued becuase people who wanted good performance mostly got PC instead and the one x doesn't really make sense unless you have a 4K screen.

This is a general them, sony relying on exclusives instead of actually offering a product that can be sold on it's own merits.

They are not selling to well on the PS4. Switch games sell more despite less than half the market share and switch games can be emulated on PC unlike PS4 games.

The ps4 CPU is dogshit
The ps4 CPU is based on a failed amd architechture called "bulldozer", it was modified in an attempt to make it viable for tablets so it will have even worse IPC than desktop bulldozer and also way lower clocks.

With bulldozer (and later piledriver) most hardware is shared between 2 'cores' so the '8-core' PS4 cpu is more like a 4 core CPU except far worse becuase of low clockspeed and horrible IPC(performance per clock).

This made PS3 emulation impossible since that would have required a far stronger CPU, it also made it difficult to get any more than 30fps in a lot of games.

Sony to abandon the PS4 soon
Due to weak CPU and slow storage sony is going to leave the PS4 and PS4 pro behind, most of their upcoming exclusives will be for PS5 only.

The dualshock 4 controller will not be supported in the case of PS5 games.

Conclusion: do not buy a PS4 now, wait for PS5 or get a PC.

This will be a real new generation.

PS5 will have about 80% more performance/TFLOP than PS4

So PS5 will have about 10 times more powerful GPU than the base PS4 and this isn't the biggest upgrade, PS5 will also use an ultrafast NVME drive that will not be bottlenecked, the upgrade is so big a lot of games cannot even be ported back to the PS4.
