RTX 5070 PC for under 1300$

RTX 5070ti PC for under 1600$

You can get under the PS5 pro price by going for the 9060xt 16GB which is not yet badly affected by the ram shortages (still overpriced though).

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YFJyXf

Note that the ram prices have gotten really bad recently so you might have to shop around to find something decent (the best kits have become way too expensive).

There is also the intel B580 to consider which is good value for the 250$ MSRP but it quickly sold out at that price and you cannot currently get it at a good price so it's not currently an option worth considering for buying a PC now.

Credit to VGFightSchool for making that list (i switched to 2TB nvme but otherwise the same).

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DNnnWt

Edit: the 6750xt is no longer a viable budget option. I didn't find anything decent below the 5060 ti 16GB

Built and benchmarks with another 700$ PC (3060ti):

Note that while you can match the PS5 pro performance (exceed it actually) for around 700$ i wouldn't recommend that, i would recommend getting more ram (at least 32GB) and a better CPU.

800$ AM5 build with a used 3070:

A lot of people have an existing PC to upgrade
Even if your current parts are bad (such as r5 3600 cpu) chances are it will still outperform the PS5 pro due to the very weak zen2 core PS5 pro is using.

I myself got something even better than the PS5 pro experience by pairing a 3090 with an r5 3600 for a few months before upgrading the CPU to an r5 3600, it was actually a lot better than the PS5 experience in practice since i had the option to push a lot of games way beyond 60fps even with that weak CPU.

You can safely get games for free on PC
First off we have stores like the epic games store giving away games but you don't actually have to bother with any of that.

You can simply join a private tracker like GGn and then simply pirate pretty much everything, you can always buy the game later if you actually wants to support the developers.

There are trusted users on GGn that will manually check a lot of uploads to verify that they are safe and good.

You can rip bluray disks on PC
You do however first need to get a bluray drive with suitable firmware for it (due to bullshit DRM) but actually you don't even need that.

You can just pirate everything.

Nyaa is way better for anime than anything sony is offering with their subscription services and 80$ disk drives.

A lot of games will never get any proper enhancement for the PS5 pro
One big issue with the console model is that because games are made for specific hardware said games have to be updated every time there is a new hardware upgrade to take proper advantage of the new better hardware.

With PC you can take near full advantage of your new hardware right away.

We will see many developers not bothering much with the pro model since it will be a small fraction of the overall PS5 user base, a lot of older titles will end up not taking any advantage of it at all.

Only 295 of 10813 PS4 games ended up being enhanced for the PS4 pro.

What GPU matches the PS5 pro?
PS5 currently performs similar to the 3060 12GB. Sony claimed that the PS5 pro GPU was "up to" 45% faster in terms of rendering performance. Let's see how much faster PC GPUs are in terms of framerate than the 3060 12GB.

3060 ti +28%
6700 xt +33%
6750 xt +41%
4060 ti +42%
2080 ti +43%
3070 +50%
3070 ti +61%
7700 xt +62%
6800 +65%
4070 +83%
7800 xt +97%
4070 super +113%
RTX 3090 +123%
4070 ti super +149% (still cheaper than PS5 pro)
4080 super +194% (same price as PS5 pro + stand + disk drive)

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-3060-12-gb.c3682

Closest match: 4060ti, 2080ti, 3070 (nvidia has DLSS which is likely superior to PSSR).

You might view it as unfair to only look at the price of a PC GPU but you need a PC regardless and the other PS5 pro components are basically trash. You don't actually want to match the PS5 pro in terms of CPU performance.

Less censorship and more mods on PC
When i played code-vein i didn't really like any of the default outfits (outfit 1 was ok but still not what i actually wanted) so i ended up installing a mod to get the io alt dress, that's not something you are going to get on PS5.

io-alt-dress-pink.png

It's actually fairly likely that sony would censor a dress like that now due to it showing too much skin. They definitely would have censored the sexy party dress (nsfw mod):

Cost of futureproofing
I would recommend paying for a better PSU to make sure you will not have to upgrade that later down the line.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/B4qb6Q

You need to go all the way up to the 5090 to get more vram unless you go for an older model. You can however consider the 5070ti for stronger GPU performance but that still only gives you 16 GiB. I would avoid the 5070 since that one only comes with 12 GiB of vram making it bad value for its price.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9pwwZc

There is of course the very expensive 5090 to consider where you to get 32 GiB of vram, it's too bad they no longer support 32-bit physics so it still loses to the older 4090 in some titles.

There are rumors of nvidia launching 5070 super with 18GiB of vram or 5080 super with 18 GiB vram (using 3GiB modules) but it remains to be seen if that actually ends up happening (and what the price would be).

https://www.techradar.com/computing/gpu/rumored-nvidia-rtx-5080-super-specs-disappoint-some-gamers-but-i-dont-think-theres-anything-to-worry-about-with-this-gpu

Getting a on the AM5 platform will cost a lot extra and i am not sure if that should be a priority when building a budget PC, you might find out later that the motherboard you 'invested' into wasn't right after all later down the line.

Example of build i wouldn't recommend:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YBKPNz

Note that there is only some extent in which you can futureproof hardware, eventually it will either stop working due to it simply failing or technology will advance to the point where your old hardware is no longer good.

Cases and power supplies can of course have very long life.-spans.

Graphics card tend to kinda work for many many years but they will work increasingly badly for the newer titles.

so what's the bottom line? which is better?
my PC is 20yo. I need a GPU for speech recognition
PC is a much better platform to be on in generel.

On consoles you are at the mercy of sony/microsoft/nintendo and those are not exactly companies you can have trust in.

On PC you have much more freedoms including the freedom to buy whatever hardware you want and there are a lot of options that are compatible with each other due to backwards compatibility being the norm.

You also get much better support for high framerates on PC and this is the case even if your particular PC has a weaker GPU than the one in PS5 pro.

Sony now dropped the PS5 pro price down to 650$
They pretend that this is some temporary sale to induce FOMO but we can actually expect sony to keep offering very competitive prices since PS5 sales have been lagging behind PS4 sales and now they also have to worry about the upcoming switch 2.

At 650$ it's a challenge to get that performance on PC even if you resort to a used GPU (which isn't exactly ideal).

Sony is raising their console prices again
This has been a general pattern with them. Sometimes their consoles are much cheaper than equivalent alternatives (in terms of performance) but that tends to not last. Interestingly sony is warning people in advance so you can still get it for the old prices (which of course isn't that great of a deal either after earlier price hikes).

On 2:nd april we will get the following prices:

U.S.
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
U.K.
  • PS5 – £569.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99
  • PS5 Pro – £789.99
Europe
  • PS5 – €649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – €599.99
  • PS5 Pro – €899.99
Japan
  • PS5 – ¥97,980
  • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥89,980
  • PS5 Pro – ¥137,980

Even with the bad ram shortages currently affecting PC that's not much cheaper than the current cost of building a better PC (if you are willing to go for 16 GB DDR4 and very outdated CPU).
