The stereotypical picture of an alpha male is false. Being an true alpha male will also involve taking care of other people making it beneficial for other people to follow you.

You do need to be though to protect the people you are leading, if you are weak you will not be a good leader and then you should be replaced by someone else.

If you are too overly aggressive you just end up in jail/hospital if not dead.

Even the strongest male in the world can be easily defeated by other weaker males working together as a group. You cannot just rely on brute force.

You can still benefit from being ruthless as a leader but then you need to play the cards right, one bad move and you may lose your power and find yourself in a really bad situation.

You have the true alpha male role if you do not have anyone above you that can overrule you. This essentially requires you to become a dictator which isn't very realistic.

So instead you end up having to go for something less like ruling the area together with other people or becoming a successful business leader, in these cases you still need to play by rules set by other people and you cannot really do what you want.

But even as dictator you still need to please the people you are leading.

Alpha males can also be defined as males that enjoy a lot of reproductive success (such as top 1%) in our modern society this is sperm donors which is not really what most people view as alpha males.

In our current society being a leader isn't really tied to reproductive success, there might be some relationship but it's not an affective way to reproduce. In other societies however the leaders did enjoy a lot of reproductive success, they could have many wives and had a not of reproductive sex with them.

Becoming a cult-leader is really difficult and even if you are successful you are still limited by societal laws and you risk being sent to jail if you go to far. Many more successful cult-leader hide the fact that they are leading a cult in order to prevent people from realizing they are being used.
