If someone thinks you're a cool dude, that's potentially very ephemeral

A coolness factor basically just some aesthetic value that you may have in someone's opinion. So, just like someone may like the color green one day and then decide they like the color blue better, someone could decide you're not cool after all, just based on their whim/preference changing.

Or, maybe you could act differently one day than the previous day, and they might think that your style of how you live your life, or how you behave, isn't that great anymore; and since aesthetic value is subjective, you're kinda fucked because you can't even really argue with them because it's just their opinion.

On the other hand, you could devote yourself to just having a good function that people value out of necessity, e.g. maybe you start a septic tank pumping company that's useful to people. Or maybe you play the bass guitar in a band. It's never going to be as sexy as, say, being the lead singer. Your value is just as a betabuxx or whatever, and you have to exchange with people on a mercenary basis, but they're not really gonna get excited about you; they just might be relieved if you get rid of some discomfort they have (e.g. their septic tank being clogged, or the song not sounding right without the bass), but other than that they probably mostly take you for granted and/or just regard you as a tool to be used, and probably they even wish they didn't need you, if you're not only lacking in coolness, but you're actually uncool (aka stylistically ugly; essentially nerdy).

Nerdiness could have its own coolness factor to those whose conception of pleasing style is based on a focus on functionality, but that too is subject to their changing whims and your changing behavior. At the end of the day, you don't necessarily really have freedom to be the way you wanna be, while still pleasing others.

Also, if your coolness is based on how you get results, if you fail to get results, then you're fucked, even if your failure was due to reasons that had nothing to do with the inadequacy of your methods. E.g., maybe you're a great soldier but you just get unlucky one day and step on a mine. People might say you suck, even though the next guy was even more careless about where he stepped but just got lucky.
