In the corporate world, voting takes place, but there's a lot of contractual stuff that can be done to avoid, e.g., wasted votes. For example, voters can set up voting trusts where they agree to vote a certain way. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_trust If they don't, that's breach of contract. So for example, if we're trying to put Ralph Nader on the board of directors, we don't have to worry that the other guy is going to defect and vote for Al Gore, because his hands are tied from doing so.
