Xbox consoles isn't the main competition sony has to worry about anymore

Causuals tend to mainly play on their phones these days.

On the other extreme we have high end PC.

A lot of people also already have PCs that can be cheaply upgraded to get a decent gaming experience.

If you already have a PC that is good for productivity the marginal cost of adding a GPU for gaming is going to be less than the cost of a console with similar performance. A PS5 pro costs 700$ while a 5060ti 16GiB (which is more powerful) goes under 500$.

GPUs can also be useful for productivity which is one of the reasons why i bought my 3090 even if i later didn't get much usage out of it in that regard.

Streaming
The best current option is geforce now which for 20$ a month let's you play on the equivalent of a 4080 and you also get a CPU better than the one in consoles. Thanks to supporting framerate up to 240hz Geforce now can actually deliver lower latency than a local xbox series X (if you have good internet).

Unfortunately you are capped to playing 100 hours/month with geforce now so it's not really a viable option if you want to play a lot. There is also other restrictions such as being able to play no more than 8 hours a day and also being restricted in which mods you can use (so you cannot use code-vein mods for example).

There are also cheaper options (including from other companies) but then the quality is also going to be worse in terms of graphics/framerate.

So far however video game streaming has not taken off but maybe eventually it will be more popular than console gaming.

One strategy for getting the latency down is to spread out the servers over many locations which will reduce the typical latency someone is going to get. I actually recently measured my internet against a nearby server and it was pretty low:

If you have a 100hz screen the time between each frame will be 10ms.

Most PS5 and XSX games are 60fps at best which means that the time between each frame is at least 16.666 ms.

Geforce now ultimate does let you play the game on a PC with a 4080 but unfortunately you are still severely limited by bandwidth and this will be especially bad if your internet isn't good enough.

Super shite tbh. So much issues i was a gfn user for 2 years but finally did a good decision and got a ps5 pro. Feels better games looks better. Streaming never gonna be like actual gaming….

How good/bad is your internet?

Its 1gb hyper optic. The internet is good. But the gfn still needs more time to get better. Lots of issues with servers also waiting even with ultimate. Fps are not stable and some games just look super blurry and washed out even in 4k.

Nice to finally get a real answer.

Looks like it isn't as good as people made it out to be, no surprise there.

Yea a 4080 is way more powerful than even the PS5 pro GPU but all that will be bottlenecked by the internet and the compression is going to be significant.

1440p165 (what i play as) would be 14.598144 Gbps without any compression.

Yeah, i thought it will be good but the reality was different. Also. In 1440p only 120fps mode and as the servers has outdated cpus even in cod cant really achieve constant 120fps and also lag with it. There is hdr and vrr but hdr is not as good as on console. 240hz only in 1080p and only in few fps games.
On ps5 pro the image much sharper and more easy to see the details. On gfn even tho u play in higher resolution and details still have everything blurry and the details will be lost.

U can try for 1 month free i think.

I've been using GeForce Now (Ultimate) for a few months now and am honestly amazed at how good the streaming quality is. It definitely depends on your internet, but when playing while plugged in via Ethernet cable on a 27" 4K monitor, I often forget that I'm playing a streamed game. Using my laptop is even better. I have a PS5 and prefer using GeForce Now if using a smaller screen. On the other hand, I prefer my PS5 when playing on my 48" 4K TV. The quality of the streaming goes down as screen size goes up (to my eyes).

PC-console hybrids
A good example here is the stream-deck that does at least try to deliver the console experience while also fully supporting the PC functionality.

With the steam deck you are not actually locked to just buying games from steam but obviously most buyers are going to mainly/only do that since that is a lot more convenient than trying to get epic games or whatever working.

There has been talk about microsoft potentially going that route and they might actually try first that with a handheld.

Interestingly sony kinda tried that breifly with "other OS" for the PS3 only to quickly backtrack and try to disable that via updates (which they got sued for and had to settle).

I don't think the hybrid approach is viable for devices sold at a significant loss but it should work if sold close to the manufacturing cost.

Nintendo
Nintendo no longer directly competes against sony but buying a nintendo switch (1 or 2) is still another option available to people besides buying a PS5.

The switch 1 actually outsold the PS4 by a pretty big margin and it would not surprise me if switch 2 ended up outselling the PS5.

So while sony has much more powerful hardware nintendo instead offers a system that is portable. A lot of people do value portability more than getting the best graphics/framerate (not that PS5 pro offers the best graphics either).

Nintendo unlike sony refuses to port their games to PC to the point where you have to wait for emulation instead (nintendo obviously hates people emulating their games and does their best to shut it down with limited success).

I don't actually like nintendo and i have very little interest in their games but clearly a lot of other people do like what they are offering.
