People are always like, "Okay, so you get millions of people to become fans of your work, but how will you monetize that?"

Doesn't it seem like a stupid question? How does anyone with a bunch of fans of their work monetize it?

Let's say you develop free software that millions use. Then you charge people for consulting services when they have problems with it or need a new plugin developed. Wasn't that how Canonical was able to fund Ubuntu, or at least defray some of the costs of it?

How does Facebook make money, despite the fact they're giving away a service for free to their users? Advertising, and selling data.

Or if you were giving away your music, you'd probably charge for T-shirts or concerts or something. Or in the case of gamer girl, she sells her bathwater. There's always a way, once you have popularity.

Given that we've seen this stuff happen so much, where something became popular and then somehow got monetized down the line, one would think people wouldn't worry so much at the beginning how they'll monetize it, but it keeps coming up.

The issue is that you dont get your reward now and you might have bills to pay, thus you might feel like you have to start monitizing now (or even give up) because you cannot financially continue with what you are doing.

A lot of people will never go anywhere, doing intellectual works come with hard competition.

Yeah, the issue is that even if they agree, "Okay, maybe this could be a popular product," they still want to know, "Yeah but once it gets popular, how do you monetize it?" And then you tell them and they still don't believe it.

This is why, I think, most popular products were invented because someone wanted to invent something cool for its own sake, rather than to make money off of it, although money did often come along the way.

Even NEETs who have their bills paid by parents will still ask about monetization. It almost just seems like an excuse to not work on something that isn't already established. But then they also say, "I don't do well at the corporate world either." So, if you suck at the corporate world, and you don't want to work for a startup either because you lack faith that a popular product could be monetized, then what does that leave? Basically, horsefucking, of the fence-jumping variety, for the next 40 years or however long.
