If you are religious to increase status or to scam people, I can understand, but some people are true believers. Is religion a mental illness?

I was asking that because I noticed how one of my friends behaves like an alcoholic, he needs his dose of religion every day. Then I noticed that every religious dude is like that. They are mentally ill.
