Wasting the time of scammers is altruistic since it means less time for these scammers to target others.
If the scammer contacts you first retaliating has the added benefit of deterring others from trying to scam you.
Most scams are fairly obvious and are easy to see through. For example we have this scam where they promised 25% risk-free interest for a period of just 7 days, nobody is going to provide you with a high risk-free return. Companies want to keep their borrowing costs down and if the company is stable they will not have to take high-interest loans from people.
I did verify that this was indeed a scam by looking at the bitcoin adresses i got access too, one guy invested 0.043btc only go get nothing back, poor guy. The scammers didn't bother creating fake blockchain transactions to make it seem more legitimate (sending money to themselves claiming it was some investor).
The scammer was dumb enough to continue even providing deposit details for a bank after i basically explained to him why this couldn't be legitimate.
Then i wasted even more of his time by asking a lot about the ESG policy for the fictional company.
