There are a lot of people who make a living as independent content creators (bloggers, youtubers, etc), if it actually work out for you this will allow you to live a good life where you do not have to put up with having to use 40hours/week on a a job you hate.

The issue is that most people who try to make money on youtube will not actually be successful, they will put a lot of hours into making videos only to see they only got a few thousand views in total and no income from it at all.

There are a lot of people creating content and most of that will hardly be seen by anyone, it will just be ignored taking up space on the youtube channel

Difficulties monetizing your content
In order to actually get views you will typically have to offer most if not all of your content for free, then you run into the issue, how are you doing to make money out of it.

Youtube does take 45% of the income from ads only allowing you to keep 55%, twitch takes 50%.

A lot of videos get "demonitized" meaning no ads will be placed on it, then you will have to yourself strike some deals with people interested in sponsering you and this will take up time that could have been used to actually create content.

Deplatforming
You are not actually the real costumer if you are not actually paying them money. You are just a user and they can at any moment delete your account and all your posts without warning.

Most platforms will mostly cater to people interesting in advertising there, not individuals using their services without paying them any money.

Having your own platform
In order to have your own platform you need to pay for domain (about 12$/year) and also pay for a company to do hosting for you (10 to 100 $/year) unless you are willing and able to have your own server.

You are of course unlikely to get much if anything in return, you will be spending money and then often hardly anyone will actually use your platform. Usually only a few people bother to register on your forum even if you make it as easy as possible to do so. Most people want to stick to services they are already registered on (discord, reddit, etc) and therefore it's significantly harder to get a significant amount of users when you have your own website.

You are also taking a greater legal risk by having your own platform.
